Who We Are:

What Animal Resources does is simple. We provide solutions that will have positive results for animals during disasters. Working with communities, animal welfare organizations, and emergency management agencies throughout the United States and Canada, we offer the extensive knowledge and experience of our Staff and trained Volunteers during natural disasters and large scale human-caused emergencies.

Animal Resources excels in setting up temporary evacuation shelters for animals who have been displaced during a disaster. Our field tested policies, procedures, and forms, which have been developed by our Staff after responding to over 80 major disasters, have been proven to work. The highly skilled and professional Animal Resources team can take chaos and confusion, and turn it into a professionally run response operation with positive results for those that we work with and the animals receiving our help. In addition to sheltering, Animal Resources is prepared to help with evacuations, plus search and recovery.

Recognizing the importance of planning ahead, Animal Resources is available year-round to communities to assist them in developing disasters plans. We offer a variety of different educational and training programs designed specifically for the public, animal welfare organizations, and emergency management agencies. All of our trainings have been developed to give participants practical information that prepares them to deliver the highest standard of services required to safeguard animals affected by disasters.

With the passing of the Federal PETS Act in October 2006, emergency management agencies are now required to include provisions for animals in their disaster plan. Animal Resources is encouraged by the progress that has been made in recognizing the human/animal bond, especially when people are faced with not knowing what to do with their animals when they are being told to evacuate. We are also aware that many emergency management agencies are struggling to develop the animal component of their plan. Their biggest challenges include a limited knowledge of managing animals during disasters, having the manpower to implement a plan, and the financial resources to pay for necessary equipment and services. Animal Resources is qualified to provide assistance and guidance in meeting these challenges.

Hurricane Katrina was a major event for the people and the animals in the Gulf Region, with rippling effects that stretched across the United States. Since then, positive changes have been made but there is still a great deal of work to be done to ensure animals will receive the help they deserve. There are numerous animal welfare organizations now involved in providing disaster relief services for animals, but all of their combined resources are still not enough to reach all the animals needing help in each disaster. For this reason, Animal Resources recognizes the importance of sharing what we know to assist communities in becoming more self-sufficient.
